Just as Storm Claudia hit the northern region the previous evening, Manchester City blew Manchester United aside at the Etihad Stadium. It was a statement three-nil triumph for the City coach's side thanks to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that clearly signaled their championship potential as they reinforced their place at the league summit.

Successive Defeats for Manchester United

This outcome signalled consecutive Women's Super League defeats for the United manager's side for the first time since spring 2024, placing them seven points off the league leaders with their trophy ambitions severely dented.

Manchester United's capacity to balance league and continental soccer with a limited team has been a hotly discussed topic since they earned a place in the European competition. Considering the fixture list, it always appeared this was the period that would fully examine this ability. Unfortunately for the visitors, they appeared weary from start to finish, the landmark win against PSG clearly having left its mark.

Tactical Shifts

Marc Skinner had sought to make changes with a handful of adjustments. Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all provided freshness, although the dropping of the high-performing Melvine Malard to the bench raised a few eyebrows.

City, in comparison, have no similar loading worries. The City coach made one adjustment from the previous win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her initial starting appearance since healing from a physical setback.

Commanding Opening Period

They added to their lead with an additional two goals just before the break. When Rose was allowed to advance through the center from central defence, the field became spacious for the hosts. The key Casparij received possession on the right side before delivering a pinpoint low cross for Shaw to tap home. Four minutes later, they had a third goal after a rapid turnover in the ball saw Hemp allowed the space to drive a shot home from range.

Second Half

The clearest adjustment came from Skinner at the interval as Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was too late to change the course of the contest. Ex- Manchester City player Park came nearest, striking the upright, but the away team were creatively abject and were unable to produce a solitary shot on goal.

The home side, in contrast, could have added to their cushion when a delightful Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it mattered little to the hosts. Previously unable to defeat any team who placed above them in the prior term, City's side now have successes against the Gunners and United to place them in a strong standing after nine games.
